Instagram is the perfect place to find your audience and expand it, as well as being an excellent platform to connect with other authors and share tips.


Building your profile

  • It should explain who you are and what you do

  • Use the name you write under so that you're easier to find

  • Include relevant details about your books and you in the bio

  • Include the link to your website/ set up a linktree which can include multiple links

How to grow your audience

  • Instagram’s algorithm dictates what content gets viewed and as the app is fast becoming a video platform, reels are a necessity and will help you reach a much larger audience. They can be about your favourite books, book recommendations, visiting your local bookstores

  • Post regularly. If you have a consistent posting schedule, multiple times a week at the same time this will definitely help you out.

  • Post high-quality, relevant content. Make sure the pictures and videos are high resolution and as clear as possible.

  • Share on stories. This will help you engage with your audience more regularly via features like polls and questions.

  • Be creative with writing your captions. You’re a writer, use those skills!

  • Make sure to include hashtags. You can search different hashtags to see their level of popularity; make sure to include different levels of popularity to reach a more general audience, as well as people with more niche interests.

  • Engage with other authors and influencers content. Like, save and comment on other people’s posts to create a network.

Content Ideas


  • All your books! Share your book covers, background on your characters, the world you’ve built and even the aesthetics of the book, remember Instagram is a visual platform.

  • Any deals: if you have a sale going on your website share it with your audience!

  • You’re writing process. You can even involve your audience and suggest two options that they can vote on.

  • The books you’re reading.

  • Any teasers of new content that you have coming out.

  • Your life - people like the personal. Share different aspects of your life that will show who you are, not just what your writing is.
