Fantasy Fiction to the Screen
The popularity of fantasy novels has captured the attention of many and recently it has captured the attention of the television industry. This new attention has lead to recent and new upcoming TV adaptions of popular fantasy novel series being brought to life and action. This is truly exciting news for us readers who can not simply wait to see how the directors create a true life form of the fantasy worlds we have all created only inside our imaginations.
The reading community were fascinated by the recent Netflix adaption of the Shadow and Bone series by Leigh Bardugo that released season one in 2021 with an upcoming season two to be released next month on March 16th 2023 so stay tuned. The adaption focuses on Alina Starkov (played by Jessie Mei Li), an orphan mapmaker who realises she has a power that is extraordinary and is ultimately fate-changing in a world that is consumed by war. The adaption became instantly loved by viewers as their expectations were satisfied by the directors world-building and the costume designer's creations for the cast. These ultimately fulfilled the world and feelings that Bardugo envisioned to create when writing her novel.
The School for Good and Evil is a popular fantasy fairytale series by the author Soman Chainani that was recently adapted into a film by Netflix and released in October 2022. The adaption brings to life the novels plot the world Chainani creates based on good vs evil where two girls in the real world are swept away into a fantasy world one nights as they wished to escape their grim lives. In the fantasy world, they find themselves at an enchanted school where the good are sent to the school for good destined to be heroes whilst the evil are sent to the school for evil destined to become the villains. Yet, when an evil force threatens to destroy the world, the main characters must fight to survive their issues in the real world first.
(A Court of Thorns and Roses series)
Fans of the popular ACOTAR (A Court of Thorns and Roses) series by Sarah J.Mass have become enlightened and overjoyed as it was revealed in 2021 that it will be produced into an upcoming TV series adaptation by Hulu. The series begins with A Court of Thorns and Roses, followed by A Court of Mist and Fury, A Court of Wings and Ruin, A Court of Frost and Starlight and lastly its newest instalment named A Court of Silver Flames. The fantasy-romance series focuses on the three Archeron sisters, Feyre, Nesta and Elain who are swept into the fantasy world of Prythian and its political and physical conflicts after Feyre kills a faerie creature from Prythian in the mortal world. It will be exciting to see how Mass and Hulu bring these novels to action through the screen.
